A private bird of prey observatory in Hohenbeilstein castle moat. On display are 100 birds of prey from four continents with regular flight demonstrations.
Castle Hohenbeilstein sits enthroned on a hill above the winding half-timbered streets of the town of Beilstein. Today, Hohenbeilstein is home to a falconry known far beyond the borders of the country, which delights many visitors with its interesting flight demonstrations - eagles, vultures and co. circle majestically over Beilstein.
Castle falconryOn the tour through the castle moat, visitors can discover the great diversity of birds of prey. Around 100 birds of prey from 4 continents can be seen on the bouncy castles and jails with shelters and modern breeding enclosures, which were built and set up according to the needs, latest scientific findings and, above all, for the benefit of the animal.
Flying demonstrations
The flight demonstrations take place in the castle courtyard. The highlight is the various vulture species with wingspans of almost 3 meters. With optimal thermals, the vultures of the Hohenbeilstein castle falconry fly circles at an altitude of around 2000 meters. But the preparation exercises, combination and rapid hunting flights of the other birds of prey are also spectacular to watch.
Flight demonstrations by the Hohenbeilstein Castle Falconry usually take place from Good Friday at the following fixed times:Today, the castle consists of the so-called "Langhans", a 27-metre-high, pentagonal keep, and the outer bailey, which is now used as a falconry and restaurant.
The castle grounds are freely accessible outside of falconry flight times.
The castle restaurant is currently closed due to a change of tenant. However, the castle courtyard with its charming seating is still a scenic rest and picnic area.
A small snack can be purchased at the Regiomats from Schlossgut Hohenbeilstein directly at the hiking parking lot below the castle.
Further catering options for the panoramic rest in the castle courtyard in the Cafe N on the outskirts of Beilstein - also open on Saturday & Sunday until the evening.
